Michigan Dairy Goat Society

YOUTH REPRESENTATIVE  PROGRAM

This year, MDGS began a new program for our youth, a Youth Representative and Youth Representative Runner-up.  These Youth Representatives, one or both, will be present at various goat activities, shows, etc. for the coming year to “promote the goat”.  They will also represent and provide information on MDGS and its various programs that benefit goat owners and breeders throughout the state.  Hopefully they will get the opportunity to visit goat activities in other states as well.  We know that they will have many wonderful experiences and meet many new friends.  Their selection is based on their goat knowledge, their participation in goat related work and their personal presentation during their interviews.   In return for their term as Representative and Runner-up, they will each receive a monetary award upon their graduation from high school to be used to further their education, be it at a University, Community College, Trade School, etc.

The Youth Representative Committee is composed of Lois Olson, Chairperson, along with Becky Kast-Dahlke and Pat White.  They were very pleased with the youth that entered the contest this year and thank them for their participation.  The youth, chosen and announced at Goat Day at MSU were Shawnee Williams of Allegan as Youth Representative and Jana Dempsey of Bath as Youth Representative Runner-up.  They are excellent examples of the tremendous future that the goat industry has in Michigan as well as very fine representatives of the youth in our state.  We know that we will be seeing and hearing from them both at many of the goat functions this coming year.

We would encourage all MDGS youth to watch for the application in an upcoming Goat News, and on the MDGS Website.  We hope to have all the requirements and information in the Nov/Dec issue so that you will have plenty of time to prepare your application for 2009.  MDGS has long felt that the future of the goat industry belongs with our youth and is very proud that we have some of the finest young adults as our members.  It is with these thoughts in mind that the Board of Directions decided to present this program for them to help in their future endeavors.
